Latino Web Site of the Week
by Melissa Aguilera
Latiknow.com
founding fathers designed this site to fulfill the
"need to express our Hispanic culture through art, writing,
education, health and Latino food." The site includes a
directory of Latino news and Hispanic resources on sports, fashion
and alternative lifestyles, along with a calendar of events.
The
company was started in April, 1999 by President and founder John
Colón, who was joined by Harry Duran, VP of operations, the
following November. The concept was not to confine information
resources to dining/dancing, but expand on world related issues.
The site offers a variety of current information ranging from
education (search jobs, resume building/database and student
loans), to "La Tienda", which is a collaboration of the
latest books/magazines, personals, current events and cooking
recipes. Both John and Harry bring a combination of creative and
technical experience to the table and have strived to
"develop a unique mix of people from the industries of
information technology, finance, law, hospitality and marketing.
The writers and editors come from the very same communities that
read 'Latiknow.com'.
Latiknow.com
has participated and sponsored events for organizations such as El
Museo del Barrio, Latino Laughter (NYC comedy club), Committee for
Hispanic children and families and Dominican Heritage Week. They
are privately funded and have a full-time staff of 4 employees,
supported by 15 part-time contributors. Their current audience is
primarily made up of American Latinos, ages ranging from 20-39.

Latino Music Lovers Beachfront Extravaganza
As part of M.A.C.H.’s (Music and Arts for Humanity) three-day
Festival of the Elements 2000, on Saturday, July 22nd, a Latin
music performance event will take place. Headliners include: The
Barrio Boyzz, George Lamond, hot salsa bands and more. The event
will also showcase emerging artists from the Bridgeport area and
beyond. M.A.C.H. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
education and empowerment of Bridgeport’s youth through music.
Platinum selling artists The Barrio Boyzz and George Lamond
have been favorites for years—the Boyzz for their streetwise
harmonies and Lamond for his vocal prowess and 'papi chulo'
factor. The New York born Boyzz drop a hip-hop and R&B flavor
over romantic Latin tracks and have performed with the late
Selena, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan,
Michael Jackson and Michael Bolton. Lamond’s latest album,
Entrega, debuted at #1 on La Mega's (97.9 FM) Top 20 and has since
gone Gold.
The performance event will take place at Seaside Park.
Sponsorship is being provided by Telemundo, Latiknow.com, WRYM 840
AM and VIP Latino. Stay tune to www.Latiknow.com
for the low-down on additional performers, news, promos and other
exciting details about the Festival of The Elements 2000. Other
events in the festival’s itinerary will take place throughout
the Bridgeport community and highlight its environmental and
cultural resources. Local venues such as parks, theaters, museums,
Seaside Park, and the Long Island Sound, will be used to showcase
the elements of the festival: Bridgeport’s water, earth, air and
fire assets.
The Festival of The Elements will be an annual event that will
highlight the uniqueness of the City of Bridgeport. The
celebration will incorporate local participation from the diverse
ethnic communities as well as participation by national and
international artists. Be sure to check out the Latin music
performances--they will be a Latin music lover’s dream. And for
those new on the scene…the rhythm will get you!

65th Infantry
Regiment Documentary
Latiknow.com
sponsored a benefit screening for the first major
documentary to chronicle the history of the all-Puerto Rican 65th
Infantry Regiment
The afternoon was fulfilling in many ways. The setting, which
was at the Pageant Restaurant in the East Village, had a very warm
and inviting ambiance. The food, donated by several restaurants,
was absolutely delicious. The entertainment ranged from music
playing on a CD player to a live singer and even a comical
magician. Latiknow was also able to network and meet with a lot of
different people that represented the Latino community in
different ways. Most importantly, everyone learned something very
valuable on October 3-how historians can be selective in how they
record information.
The afternoon climaxed when the documentary demo was screened.
Even though it was only a demo, it made an emotional impact. The
65th Infantry Regiment is the only Hispanic-segregated
unit in United States military history. The documentary, when
completed, will detail the stories of these brave and heroic men.
The documentary will also bring to light the racism, tragedy and
controversy surrounding the 65th Infantry Regiment.
When producer and director Noemi Figueroa Soulet spoke, she
made one very thought provoking point, "The story of the 65th
Infantry must be told. You did not see any Puerto Ricans in John
Wayne movies or in Private Ryan or on the History
Channel". Historians and filmmakers can be and are selective.
This story, until now, lived on through word of mouth. I am glad
to see this story being told by a Puerto Rican. I would hate to
see someone like Steven Spielberg make another poorly documented
film as he did with Amistad. As Noemi said, "This
documentary will be the only living record of what
these men went through for generations to come."
I was moved to see the reactions of the some the veterans of
the 65th who were present at this event. A lot of them
had tears in their eyes when they expressed their gratitude in
seeing someone trying to document their story. I am certain many
of them never thought this day would ever happen. I admire and
salute their bravery.
